It is narrated in Saheeh Bukhari and Muslim that Ibne Abbas narrated:
When the Holy Prophet was seriously ill, and all of us were around him, he opened his eyes and said,
Bring me pen and paper so that I may write something which shall
always guide you and shall keep you on the Right Path and shall save
you from being astray.
Hearing these words from the lips of the Holy Prophet, Omar said,
“Ur- Rajulo la -Yahjur” Meaning this man was talking which makes no sense.
” Hasbona Kitab Allah” The Book of God is sufficient for us.
This gave rise to a dispute among the companions. Some were of the opinion that as the Holy Prophet was to be obeyed at all times and under all circumstances a pen and paper should be provided to him, while some of them were on the side of Omar. The hot discussion on that point between the companions gave rise to noise and the Holy Prophet angrily told them
To go away from his presence and leave him alone.”
Whenever Ibne Abbas, who was the most profound scholar and commentator of the Holy Qur’an and the most reliable narrator of the traditions, remembered the event of the day, he used to weep and would say,
“Alas, what an unfortunate day it was when the Holy Prophet demanded that a pen and paper be provided to him and there arose a dispute among his companions and they made such a noise that the Holy Prophet told them to get away from him and leave him alone.”
The Holy Prophet asked Ali to come close to him. Ali (AS) came and observing the ailing condition of the Holy Prophet raised his head and placed it on his own chest. The Prophet passed away while his head was resting on the chest of Ali (AS).
The news of the death of the Holy Prophet spread quickly among the companions. All of them came out of their house weeping and crying loudly. Umar was very upset. He took his sword out and said, nobody should say that the Prophet was dead. Then he took abu’bakr away from the place to a house outside Madina called Saqeefa Bani Sa’ada. Many companions went with them. While Ali (AS) and most of the Bani Hashim stayed in the house of the Holy Prophet while Ali (AS) prepared for his burial.
The Historian Ibnul Wardi mentions in his book that the funeral bath to the Holy Prophet was given by Ali (AS), assisted by his uncle Abbas and many other relatives.
The Holy Prophet laid to rest on the night of Wednesday. He was 63 years of age. He was buried in the house of his daughter Fatimah which was annexed to the Mosque of the Prophet.
In his last hours, the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w.) said to his companions who gathered in his house:
"Bring me an inkwell and a shoulder-blade so that I will write for you a letter with which you will never goes astray..."
Then owing to the heaviness of his sickness, he fainted. One of those who were sitting by his bed noticed that and said:
"The man speaks deliriously". “Shall we bring you an inkwell and a shoulder-blade?"
When he felt he would presently depart he confided to Imam Ali (a.s.) all his personal affairs and those related to closed his eyes and died, with his head was in the lap of Imam Ali (a.s.).(l08) Imam Ali (a.s.) and his family made all the arrangement for his ritual bathing. Then they preyed on him. Imam Ali (a.s.) ordered the Muslims to go in and pray on their great Messenger (s.a.w.) and pay tribute over him. Prayers having been offered, the Commander of the Faithful Ali (a.s.) and the family of the Prophet (s.a.w.), in the presence of a number of his companions, laid the Prophet (s.a.w.) to rest in the very room he had passed away.

Death and Burial
In Sahih Muslim, there is a famous tradition narrated by Ibn 'Abbas saying:
Three days before the Prophet's death, 'umar ibn alkhattab and other companions were present by his side. The Prophet said,
"Now let me write something for you whereby you shall not go astray after me."
umar said,
”The Prophet is overcome by illness; you have the Qur'an, the Book of Allah, which is sufficient for us."
'umar's statement caused a furor among those present. Some were saying that the Prophet's command should be obeyed so that he might write whatever he desired to write for their guidance. Others sided with'Umar. When the tension and uproar intensified, the Prophet said,
"Get away from me!"
Therefore, Ibn 'Abbas used to say,
"It was a miserable, absolutely miserable, occurrence that the conflict of opinion and noise made by the people came in the way of the Prophet's writing a will and, because of it, the Prophet could not leave behind what he wanted to put on paper."
Sa'eed ibn Jubayr's narrative is thus recorded in Sahih Bukhari:
Ibn 'Abbas said,
"What a miserable day it was that Thursday!"
And he wept so bitterly that the pebbles lying there became wet with his tears. Then he continued, when on a Thursday, the Prophet's sickness intensified, he said,’
Get me the things to write with so that I may write something by which you may never be misguided after me.' People differed and quarreled over the matter, although quarreling in the presence of the Prophet was unseemly. People said that the Prophet was talking in delirium. The Prophet cried out,
'Go away from me! I am more sound than you are."'

Four days before on Thursday when the pain was at its height , Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) said ,
let me write for you a plan after which you will never be mislead .
There were many people in the house at that time . umar said that Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) is in pain , it would further deteriorate his illnes , and that Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) has explained to us the Qur'an which is enough for you all .
This lead to two group , one in favour of Umar (RA) and the other wanting Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) to continue and it lead to arguments between the two groups . When the noise amongst the companions rose and there was lots of confrontation Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) said "All of you get up from my side".
